John W. Goodwin came to Washington Territory by wagon train in 1849, age six years.


Both came to Yakima Valley in 1867, He took land in Cowiche in 1867, and took pre-emption in Parker Bottoms in 1869.

John W. Goodwin, Pioneer of Washington Territory in 1849, aged six years. Born August 12, 1843 in Springfield IL, died Jan 22, 1924 in Yakima WA and buried in Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima.


Son of William Goodwin (also a pioneer of 1849), born in Dearborn County IN., May 18, 1817. Died in Bellinghm, WA in 1902 and buried at The Dalles, OR. Married in Parke County IN. Feb 17, 1839 to Catherine Roberts, born in TN. Dec. 11, 1816. Died at The Dalles OR in 1889, and buried at The Dalles.


John W. Goodwin was married at Parker Bottom, WT (near Buena, WA) March 4, 1869 to Catherine Irby, born in Missouri, Manuary 25, 1852. She died January 25, 1950 to Catherine Rebecca Irby, daughter of Charles S. Irby, born in Nashville, TN on August 9, 1817. Died in Spangle, WA on Jan 14, 1906, buried at Spangle. Married in Missouri in 1849 to Margaret Melvina Birchfield, born Merrimac River MO in 1831, died at Spokane WA in 1927, aged 96 years, and buried in Spokane, WA.

Kwi-wy-chas first settler came in 1867 in the person of John W. Goodwin. He sold in 1870 to J.W. Stevenson who still lives on the old homestead. Goodwin later located in Parker Bottom and married Kate, a famous beauty whose fortress had been bombarded by many an earnest swain.

John W. Goodwin, who is one of the pioneer ranchers in the vicinity of Wapato, was born in Crawford County, Illinois, August 12, 1843. and has therefore passed the seventy-fifth milestone on life's journey.


His is a son of William and Catherine (Roberts) Goodwin, the former a native of Illinois, while the latter was born in Tennessee. The Goodwin family was established in Illinois in pioneer times. In 1847 they removed to Parke County, Indiana and in 1848 went to Iowa, settling twenty-five miles from Dubuque. In the spring of 1849 they started overland for California but changed their plans and went to Oregon. (more).....
